VALLEY OF THE DEER
“Canadian video artist Jillian McDonald spent much of the past year as ‘artist in residence’ at Glenfiddich Distillery, in the highlands of Scotland. As a Burns’ Night tribute to both Art and Whisky, IDEAS host Paul Kennedy visits her in Dufftown, and watches while she makes single-malted art.”

Valley of the Deer

Since July 15th I’ve been in Dufftown and other parts of Scotland shooting a new video called Valley of the Deer.

Below are some stills…

Highland Games

Many pipe and drum bands preparing to march through town and launch the games. The sight of them all was very moving.

Tug of War, I haven’t seen this sport performed since high school!

This painting was in a vehicle that was itself a musical instrument. I’d love to see that driving around Brooklyn, selling icecream out the back.

Animal cookie. No idea which animal… clearly a patriotic one.

Dufftown

Dufftown is dreamy. Enormous red mushrooms, giant purple lupins, secret lakes and covered bridges, coloured flags high on warm wind, stone houses, grey green lichen, black trees. The countryside in every direction is dotted with sheep.

I’ve been here for one and a half weeks and am fully settled. The highland games came to Dufftown this weekend, as well as rain and deep sunshine in equal measure. It is very quiet here, but then again never silent, there are always cars on the road into town which lies outside my door, and some sounds and smells from the distillery are constant.

I am researching Scottish folklore and legends for a new video and in the meantime have shot and edited a short video titled Ceremonial (working title), inspired by the highland games and the 2012 London Olympics opening ceremony. Well not really, but they were on my mind, as was Ray Bradbury’s (RIP) Something Wicked This Way Comes.

A foggy day in Dufftown

Dufftown, Scotland where I’ll be shooting a new video tilted The Valley of the Deer, in residence at The Glenfiddich Distillery. On the way from Aberdeen I saw fairy rocks, a maiden stone, a gallows tree, black birds, thousands of sheep, donkeys and ponies, the largest softest cows I have ever seen, and a bull that I swear was buffalo.

Home sweet home:

Sheep meadow, Upper Island Cove, NL

More productions shots, masquerading as tourist photos.

upper island cove

Every time I have been here (over the past 4 years) there is an appliance or car part in this location, which is difficult to get to via meadow, the way I arrived – my amateur anthropological skills lead me to conclude there is a local custom of pitching broken possessions off the cliff. I am unsure whether this practice is related to the presence of Labatt’s cans, also found at this location.

Sheep conference, the purpose of which will be revealed…

Directly opposite from the sheep, their ocean view. You can’t tell in this photo but there were whales surfacing here.

I am trying to appear disinterested, the sheep are not. There are at least three in this photo, you can see their ears over the hill line. They were watching me like hawks, or like sheep.

These sheep watched me boldly as I approached, then headed straight for me, I bolted. I know they are vegetarians, but that wouldn’t stop them from running me off the cliff. And who would hear me scream, besides the other sheep, whales, seagulls, mice, wildflowers, and a pony?
upper island cove

Even more sheep when I turned the corner. I can hear them bleating in every direction.

And over a cliff was the largest gathering.

Suddenly they all stood up and started to chase me, the whole gaggle, pod, herd, fleet, flock, GANG, what do you call them, murder? I hightailed it out of there, precariously with gear through swamp and over unstable rocks.

The pitcher plant, which I know grows here, eludes me…
